What is GMAT?

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is a computer-based standardized test used to assess your analytical and quantitative reasoning skills for business and MBA programs globally. The exam is accepted by over 7,000 universities worldwide and is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) to measure critical thinking, data analysis and literacy skills that are necessary for succeeding in graduate business programmes.

The GMAT Exam Structure 2026

The GMAT is a computer-adaptive exam that adjusts its difficulty level based on your performance. The test begins with moderately complex questions, where correct answers lead to tougher questions and incorrect ones lead to easier questions. It is divided into three sections — Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights — and lasts 2 hours 15 minutes, with 45 minutes allocated to each section. The exam consists of 64 questions in total, carefully designed to provide a focused, balanced and efficient assessment of the skills needed for business school and beyond.

The new exam pattern has dropped the ‘GMAT Focus Edition’ branding — the test is now simply called the GMAT. The structure is shorter and tighter, and all three sections carry equal weight in determining the final score. The score remains valid for 5 years, allowing flexibility when applying to business schools over that period.

GMAT Marking and Penalty

The GMAT does not impose any penalty for incorrect answers, which means there is no negative marking. However, candidates must answer every question before proceeding, as the exam does not allow you to skip questions. Questions left unanswered at the end of a section can result in a score penalty. Since there is no deduction for wrong answers, making a guess is always better than leaving a blank. Effective time management is therefore essential to ensure all questions are attempted while maintaining accuracy.

Top MBA Programs

Most top MBA programs require a strong GMAT score for admission. If your target is a business school abroad, pairing your GMAT prep with the right UK study visa or Canada study visa guidance can make your application far smoother.

Preparation Tips

Understand the GMAT structure: Learn the section-wise structure, question types and time limits to build an effective preparation schedule.

Set your target score: There is no universal score — it depends on your target university. Scoring roughly 20% above the cut-off increases your chances of acceptance.

Take mock tests: Attempt a GMAT mock test every week and refine your study plan based on the results.

Time management: Practise questions under strict time limits to build a reliable pace for every section.

Focus on weak areas: Identify where you lose marks, analyse your mistakes and work on your weak points.
