What is the SAT Exam?

The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice test that is administered by the College Board. This exam is used for taking admission into undergraduate programs in the United States. It is also gaining traction among the universities in Canada and the UK as well. This exam is specifically designed for high school students who are willing to apply for bachelor's degree programs. It is administered online entirely through the digital platform of the College Board.

Eligibility Criteria

There's no age bar for taking the exam. Indian students can attempt it as many times as they want across the testing calendar year. There are also no minimum grades, percentage cut-offs or any specific requirements of the stream. This exam is usually taken by students in high school. The eligibility criteria actually comes from the university itself. The universities look at your overall academic transcript, your proficiency in English, extracurricular activities, and specific SAT range that they publish for admitted students.

SAT Exam Structure 2026

It is essential to learn about the exam structure before taking the exam. The College Board completed its shift away from the old three-hour paper test some time back, and the current Digital SAT format is considerably tighter, both in length and in how it evaluates a candidate.

The main sections of the exam are:

Reading and Writing

This section combines comprehension and grammar. It covers passages from areas such as history, social studies, literature, and science. This section tests how well you understand what you are reading and how well one can handle grammar, punctuation and sentence structure. It is essential to identify common errors and refine writing mechanisms.

  • Total Time: 64 minutes
  • Types of Questions: Multiple choice (MCQs)
  • Total Questions: 54 (27 per module)
  • Focus: Grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, tone and argument understanding

Mathematics

This section covers algebra, advanced math, geometry, problem solving, and analysis of data. The use of a calculator is allowed throughout this section. The app where one takes the test comes with a built-in Desmos calculator. The student is not required to carry a separate device.

  • Total Time: 70 minutes (35 min per module)
  • Types of Questions: MCQs and student-produced response (grid-in)
  • Questions: 44 (22 per module)

Both sections work on what's called multistage adaptive testing. Each section is split into two modules, and how you perform in the first module decides the difficulty level and consequently the score ceiling of the second. Do well early, and you unlock access to harder questions that carry more scoring weight.

A small number of questions in each module are unscored pretest items used by the College Board to trial future content. You won't know which ones these are, so it pays to treat every question as if it counts. There's also no negative marking anywhere on the test, which means an educated guess is always better than leaving something blank.

SAT Score Range

The score range of SAT is between 400 to 1600. The two major sections are Math and Reading & Writing, 200 to 800 each, where both the sections carry equal weight. One important thing that can work in your favour is that guessing will cost you nothing. There is no penalty for wrong answers. So the initial raw score is the sum of the questions that you answered correctly. Although, the initial score is not your final number. The raw scores are first converted into scaled scores, which are then used to determine the percentile ranks. Your percentile shows how well you perform as compared to everyone else who took the test. The scores are generally released 13 days after the test date.

SAT Score Validity

The validity of SAT scores does not expire officially and remains on your College Board record permanently. However, most universities consider scores over five years old valid for admissions and you may need to retake the test based on your preferred university.

Step-by-Step SAT Registration Process

  • Open a College Board account from the official website using your personal information.
