What is the GRE?

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is a globally recognised standardized online test conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service) to assess a candidate's aptitude for higher education at university level. It is required for students planning graduate school abroad when applying for master's or doctoral degrees. You can attempt the exam up to 5 times a year, with a minimum gap of 21 days between attempts.

GRE Syllabus 2026

ETS has made certain changes to the GRE syllabus and exam format, so it is important to understand the syllabus before starting your preparation. The GRE General Test consists of three main sections:

Verbal Reasoning (2 sections): Tests your ability to comprehend text, analyse arguments and complete sentences, focusing on contextual understanding rather than memorizing vocabulary lists. Topics include Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence.

Quantitative Reasoning (2 sections): Tests your mathematical aptitude up to roughly class 10 level, focusing on speed and accuracy. Topics include Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Data Analysis.

Analytical Writing (AWA): Tests your ability to think critically and present ideas clearly. In the new, shortened format this section now contains a single task.

Validity of Score

GRE scores remain valid for 5 years from the test date. During this period you can use your scores to apply to graduate programs or for any other purpose that requires GRE results. ETS maintains your score records and lets you send them to institutions throughout this validity period. Once the five-year period expires, the score is no longer valid.

Eligibility Criteria

There are no specific eligibility requirements for taking the GRE — the test is open to individuals from all academic backgrounds. However, universities and programs set their own admission criteria, such as a minimum GPA, required undergraduate coursework and English language proficiency requirements. Review your chosen institution's admission requirements before applying.
